How my music video relates to theories or narrative

My A2 production brief was to create a music video and digipack using premier elements and indesign, The song I chose for my music video was Ed Sheeran’s ‘You need me’. When I started to plan my music video I knew I wanted to create a linear video which told a story in relation to the lyrics. I was influenced by Ed Sheeran’s A team music video because the song was about drugs and prostitution and the narrative of the music video for this song reflected this because the main girl in the video was a drug addict and fed her addiction by becoming a prostitute so she could pay for her habit.

My music video has elements of the Andrew Goodwin theory, Goodwins theory believes that music videos have a narrative which links to the lyrics from the song. I wanted my music video to flow and have a relation between the lyrics and the actions for example one lyric of the song I chose to link actions to was “I say the words to make you blush” I chose to have a young couple flirting together and the guy is whispering sweet things in the girls ear and is making her blush. I thought the scene wouldn’t flow properly if I had chosen to not create the scene around a couple together because the lyrics are so intimate the lyrics wouldn’t of had the same meaning. Simile this scene also reflects Todorov’s Equilibrium theory as everything is going well at the beginning. I chose to have a young couple flirting to represent the communication of love at the beginning of my music video because I want the audience to this that everything is okay, I didn’t want to have a dark , disturbing scene at the beginning because it could potential turn the audience away and not watch it, so instead I chose to have a positive beginning to entice the audience in to watch until the end.

I then went on to use another feature of Todorvos theory, the theory of dicruruption of equibliurum to show that everything isn’t okay, this scene however, is at the end of my music video because I wanted the audience’s attention to be on the music video the whole time, as if they are watching a film and waiting for the big climax at the end. The narrative for this scene was a girl being bullied and being sent hate mail. As the music video progressed, I used close up shots of the girl saying “I can’t do this” I chose my actor to say these particular words because it makes the audience suspect that she is going to do something but they do not know what as then the scene is replaced with the chorus of a young girl signing “you need me” this scene then reinforces Todorovs attempt to repair disruption as the audiences minds have been replaced with something happy it is as if the girl from the previous scene has been repaired and fixed.

I have also reflected Andrew Goodwins theory throughout my music video. For example “ VO5 with my ginger hair” I have used a ginger actor on screen when this lyric is on because the actor and lyric have an connection, If I hadn’t used a ginger actor the lyric would not have made sense and had the same meaning. I feel that in every scene of my music video some form of Andrew Goodwins theory has been reinforced which is what I wanted because I wanted my nusic video to have a strong narrative, as if my audience were watching a short film, I wanted them to understand what is going on in each scene and understand why hence why I chose to have an narrative which links in with lyrics because it is easier for my audience to understand. I feel that I have been able to achieve this due to the reinforcement of lyrics linked in with actions.
